About Emily
I’m Emily, a freelance and independent folk cellist, singer and guitarist, but my training was rigorous and classical. I’m based in Leeds, UK where I’m at the final stages of a BA in Folk, Roots & Blues music.
In my current work, I record, gig and write for pop, classical, folk and other genres, making me a very versatile teacher that can bring all of my experience to students.
Credentials-wise: I achieved a distinction in ABRSM Grade 8 cello at 15, learned classically to diploma level then went on to develop my cello studies in alternative contexts. I formally studied classical singing to Grade 8 equivalent and have since been exploring the different avenues I can take my voice down.
In 2023 I achieved distinction in my Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production and now am a regular performer, writer and session worker across Leeds and further afield.
I achieved Grade 5 theory with 98% at 14 and have since developed my knowledge and enjoy teaching all aspects of it.

Every lesson or set of lessons will be structured around the student’s individual goals and passions. With my wide background of musical study and achievement, I’m a versatile tutor and am here to harness the curiosity and excitement of students and pair it with resources and my experience of studied and professional musicianship.
We’ll start by having a chat about what you love, what is important to you and what you’d like to be able to achieve with these lessons.
Some of the directions we can go in:
- classical cello technique, tone, repertoire and exercises (I promise scales can be fun!)
- foundations of vocal health and sustainably using your voice
- classical singing technique
- ear training and music theory/sight reading
- folk cello technique and learning tunes
- folksong
- showing up as a session cellist (general musicianship, working with rhythm and harmony in a band, writing bass lines or melodic lines, etc)
- songwriting
My main goal is to share my lifelong and ever-growing joy in creating music, and to facilitate that joy in others! Please don’t hesitate with any questions or tell me something you’d love to be able to achieve! I can come up with a lesson plan for your specific goals, or we can also see how the first one goes and let the ideas flow from there :)

Emily is such an inspiring musician! Here creativity knows no bounds!
I have had the pleasure of working with Emily for the past couple of years and I honestly couldn’t recommend her more as a teacher and friend! XI’d highly recommend Emily as a tutor! From working in projects together and watching her gigs she is truly one of the most amazing, multi talented musicians out there. As well as being a super supportive and friendly colleague who is always happy to help teach and inspire others. I have learnt so much from working together.
Emily is an outstanding musician; not only is she 100% passionate and engaged in her playing and songwriting, but she always goes above and beyond in her projects. I’ve had the pleasure to work with her for over two years now in different realms. We’ve written original songs together, experimented with unique musical concepts, performed in front of live audiences, and managed projects from scratch. Despite being mainly a cellist and vocalist (and an amazing one at that!) Emily has so many musical skills beyond these, and is always open to trying new things. I highly recommend her as part of your musical journey :)
Emily is an absolute joy to work with! Her skills, knowledge, and passion for her field are outstanding :) I've had the pleasure to work with her on a few projects, and not only is she a calming and kind person to be around, but her ability to adapt specifically to an individual's needs and goals makes her the perfect person to help you grow in your next creative endeavor! I couldn’t recommend her enough :))
