About Tom
I have a solid experience in all kinds of classical technical subjects, mainly gained within two engineering courses (industrial option electromechanics and civil option aerospace) and a PhD in electrically powered aircraft (energy analysis and battery thermal management).
I have gained experience with teaching in the context of my doctorate (for 5 years already) where I provide exercises and labs sessions for electricity-related subjects. In addition, I have been tutoring French-speaking secondary students as a side job for a number of years.

It is my opinion that (for scientific subjects) memory is less important than structure.
My method is based on asking questions (in a specific order of course). The answer to the preceding question aims at sharpening the necessary insights before moving on to the next question. The greatest difficulty for the teacher is to sometimes ask different questions to allow the student to arrive at the same intended insight. Another way is the reverse exercise. When the student explains something to the tutor, the tutor gets a better idea what nuances the student has captured or omitted.
If the student can convince me of a good understanding, the acquired knowledge is strengthened by means of a theoretical summary and then a few exercises. Once the pain point has been eliminated, we continue the course at an increased pace until we find another problem that requires attention.
The content of the course serves as a guide but sometimes it is important to check certain necessary bases. In some cases I add examples which are somewhat outside the course but which can be interesting to motivate the student.
I learned that learning is a role-play, not a monologue. My goal is therefore to bring the student to a level where he or she convinces me. To get there we often go through a reverse phase, but that situation is certainly not the endpoint.
