About Cottrell
I am a Political Science and Environmental Science graduate from Brown University, educated at Winchester College, with five years of private tutoring experience and teaching experience in a school setting. I specialise in GCSE and A-Level Geography.
Having taken these exams myself, I understand both the content and the challenges students face. My teaching focuses heavily on exam technique: I work with students to reverse-engineer mark schemes so they learn to recognise exactly what examiners are looking for.
Alongside helping students master the material, I emphasise transferable skills such as analysing questions, structuring essays clearly, and applying knowledge across different topics. My aim is to help students approach unfamiliar questions with confidence and develop a method of thinking that consistently earns high marks in exams.

A typical lesson lasts 1–2 hours and begins with a quick review of the questions set at the end of the previous session, allowing us to identify and close any gaps in understanding before moving forward.
For GCSE and A-Level Geography, success often comes from applying knowledge clearly rather than simply memorising content. I therefore teach topics primarily through case studies, which make up a large proportion of exam marks. Instead of learning processes in isolation, we analyse real-world examples—for instance, studying a historical hurricane to understand both the physical conditions required for its formation and its human and environmental impacts.
My aim is to help students go beyond basic understanding and develop true exam mastery. By the end of our sessions, students should be able to approach a past paper and effectively recreate the mark scheme themselves, showing they fully understand what examiners are looking for.
