About Dr Alan
ABOUT ME
First and foremost, I love science, psychology and teaching and it comes across in my lessons. I have a PhD in Child and Developmental Psychology and am currently working as a psychology researcher at the University of Reading. I have tutored the sciences including GCSE and A-level since 2012, as well as gaining two Masters (MSc) degrees in Genes, Environment and Development (MSc, King's College London) and Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine (MSc, University College London) in addition to my Bachelors degree in Biology and Bioinformatics (BSc, Aberystwyth University). I am an experienced private tutor and am happy to tutor children of any age up to GCSE level in all sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Biology at A-level.
Please do contact me regarding psychology at school or university level.
Below is some further information regarding my school sciences tuition.
MY TUTORING
A key goal for me as a tutor is to build my tutees' confidence around the subject. Greater confidence means easier knowledge acquisition. I make sure the sessions from the start are relaxed and create an easy learning environment.
I like to engage with my students by helping them to understand why things are how they are, rather than simply getting them to memorise fact after fact. By helping them to understand how different physical laws and aspects of the natural world interact and relate to each other, I find that their confidence in exams is bolstered and memory of their subjects is increased considerably. I always try to make learning - whatever the subject may be - as fun and engaging as possible, as it is often school lessons which fail to engage and enthuse students that have left them needing tuition.
To help my students prepare for the exams, I use a combination of past papers, discussion on exam technique and other questions and problems I deem relevant. Combining such exam preparation with my other approaches to learning above (and a bit of hard work from the student!), the student will be confident entering into their exams with the knowledge, understanding and technique required to do as well as they wish.
OTHER INFORMATION
Outside of academic tutoring, I have had years of experience coaching children of all ages (4-17 years old) to play tennis. I am currently working with children in Nursery school as part of my research. I have also worked with autistic and ADHD children.
I am based in zone 2, south-east London and am happy to travel out farther depending on public transport. I currently live in Greenwich.

Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
Alan has been teaching my son science subjects for the last three months.. His lessons are tailor made and taught in a way that is very enjoyable to children. He makes sure that the lessons are not monotonous and children do have opportunities to interact as much as possible during the lesson.
Alan was a very thorough and clear tutor for my 15/16 year old son. My son had struggled at school with these subjects as he had not engaged with the teachers, (for some unknown reason). His mock results were A,B,B. He was not inspired, one to one tutoring with Alan suddenly made the subjects come in to focus for him. Alan was very prompt and was very good at keeping in touch. Alan was an excellent tutor, calm and clear, as my sons results have proved.
Alan is a reliable and an enthusiastic person who has a natural talent for teaching. He helped my daughter during her GCSE exam which made her easy to understand difficult topics as Alan would explain them in a way that is easy to understand.
