About Michael

I am a graduate of the University of Warwick and a former student of Haberdashers' Boys' School. I have over six years of tutoring experience, teaching more than 20 students both privately and in classroom settings, online and in person.

Academically, I achieved Grade 9s across my GCSEs, including English Language and English Literature, as well as A* grades in Economics and Geography at A Level.

What sets me apart is not just my academic background, but my understanding of what examiners are looking for in GCSE English. Many students struggle because they are taught what to write, rather than how to think. I specialise in breaking down complex exam techniques into clear, repeatable methods that students can apply confidently under exam conditions.

Whether it's mastering PEA/PEEL paragraphs, analysing language in depth, or tackling the often-difficult concept of structural analysis, I help students understand exactly how to turn their ideas into high-mark answers. I use relatable examples that connect English concepts to students' everyday experiences, making lessons engaging and memorable rather than simply relying on textbook explanations.

My lessons are highly structured and exam-focused. We regularly practise with past-paper questions, analyse model answers, and develop techniques that can be applied across different texts and exam boards. Homework is tailored to reinforce lesson content, ensuring consistent progress between sessions.

My goal is simple: to help students develop the confidence, analytical skills, and exam technique needed to achieve their target grades and perform at their best on exam day.

About the lesson

I teach English Language and Literature GCSE with the focus on results. Having achieved Grade 9s (A*) in both English Language and Literature, I focus on specific exam techniques; including how to analyse language and structure covering 19th-century novels, Shakespeare texts, modern post-1914 prose and poetry.

Throughout my past 6 years of teaching, my approach has led me to all my students achieving Grades 7-9 (A-A*) with students seeing rapid results in school tests and mocks.

Lessons typically last an hour and can be online and in-person and suitable from Years 7-11.
