About Nathan

During my 2007-2010 undergraduate study of English/ Linguistics (TESOL) and Education at the University of Otago in New Zealand, I completed Linguistics courses to a high standard in; all aspects of TESOL, Morphology, Syntax, Socio Linguistics, Phonology & Phonetics. Many aspects of English Literature & Writing, Teaching Methods, Classroom & Behavioural Management Strategies, Psychology, Information Processing, Neurological Learning & Development. I also achieved well in Music in World Culture & Maori language papers. I attained an overall ‘A’ average during the course of my three years of study.
As part of my TESOL training I worked closely with experienced ESL teachers to produce and personally deliver targeted English lessons to full classes of international students. This was designed to fully equip me for immediate placement in the ESL ﬁeld. A large part of my TESOL study was practical, with classroom based observation & ‘hands on’ teaching a focus of Otago Universities' highly developed TESOL program. I also delivered educational lectures to University English classes on current course material and topical issues, and presented demonstrations and analysis of speciﬁc eﬀective communication and teaching techniques. During my studies I was employed by the University as a one-on-one course tutor for several students, helping them to achieve great marks in Linguistics subjects. I have worked privately as an ESL tutor from my own home, giving one-on-one classes in reading, writing, speaking & listening aspects of English as well as conversational learning. I am also experienced in one-on-one private tutoring with high school students to improve short story & essay writing, comprehension, grammar, concision etc.
I attained high marks and experience in Eﬀective Communication & Writing: creating and delivering independent & group presentations using Powerpoint & Keynote, summary writing and advanced interpersonal communication skills; Professional Writing: producing clear, concise business letters, documents & reports. I am a conﬁdent public speaker with extensive experience in delivering self written speeches to audiences. I am also practiced in negotiating and liaising with students and staﬀ while fulﬁlling my continuing duties as a student representative and Tutor for English, Linguistic & Education students throughout my studies at the University of Otago. In these academic and practical situations, I believe I have developed excellent writing, speaking and interpersonal skills, which are reﬂected in my academic growth of achievement throughout my time of study.
I have also several years experience in orchard work with managerial duties, which meant working and living successfully for several years with people from all corners of the world. My part time sales and promotional experience has taken me from photo lab and retail work, to sports game face painting, public surveying and door-to-door sales... In all of these roles, my ability to learn quickly, connect with the public and customers and build relationships has grown. I am adaptable, and I relate well with people of all ages and nations, while maintaining a mature work ethic and professional standard.

About the lesson

I am Nathan Sharp, 41, New Zealand born and living in Perth, W.A. I am an experienced tutor in English and also an accomplished acoustic guitar player/singer/songwriter/teacher . When I tutor English students I usually focus on their current work load - homework assignments & test/exam preparation. Once I assess a student's current ability and talents, I tailor and adapt each tutoring session personally for them so they can grow better research, comprehension & output skills (mainly writing & speaking). My students have always improved their marks & I take pride in not just 'giving them the answers', but teaching them HOW to learn & grow in their English skills.
