A love of language? A love of stories? A love of young people?
To teach English meaningfully, you have to give students a reason to want to learn. To me, that means engaging them in things they are interested in … songs, videos, movies …. short stories, essays and poetry too, for sure, but how do you engage non readers in those kind of texts?
Engage students. When they are engaged, they will want to learn. At that point, teach them what they need to know to be literate. Students need vocabulary. The number one indicator of literacy is vocabulary. So, engage them with topics of interest - students are always interested in the world - and then provide them with the tools they need to make sense of their interests.
Vocab skills. Writing skills. Interpersonal skills. Personal growth skills.
I’m not advocating some sort of ‘students are all special’ type progressive agenda.
Engage them first and you get to push them to achieve. And they need to achieve certain standards.
“Reading is not walking on the words; it's grasping the soul of them.”
