About Mazie

My name is Mazie McLeod, and I am a high school student with a passion for music, the outdoors, and languages! I love spending my free time writing and reading. Some of my favorite authors are Jane Austen and Suzanne Collins. The only thing I love more than reading and writing is teaching people how to analyze written works and compose them! I have tutored English for just shy of a year, and mentored young musicians for over 2 years and loved every minute of it! I look forward to meeting new students and spreading the love of the English (and Latin) language!

About the lesson

- teaching method is personalized: not everyone learns the same and so I will adapt to each student.
- English lessons are made up of mini lectures covering one topic at a time, about 15 minutes. Then, we practice some example questions. A game may end the session, reviewing what has been previously learned. Quick look at the homework, giving instructions on how it is to be completed.
- Latin lessons begin with new vocabulary, then moving on to the grammar for the week. I follow the Memoria Press curriculum for Latin.
-Essay writing lessons will focus on learning and mastering one technique weekly. By the end of the month, they will have a project in which they will compose a short essay or short story using the methods learned to develop it.
- My lessons, as previously stated, adapt from student to student. I create all of my own curriculums (except for the Latin), and personalize the homework to each student. I track their progress diligently via gradebooks in Excel to see where they are improving or need assistance in. I am a Latin enthusiast, and have 4 years experience in studying the language, and will be using an excellent curriculum from a private, Latin based classical school.
- My English grammar lessons are intended for anyone from grades K-12, the essay writing is from fifth grade and above, and the same goes for the Latin lessons.
- Despite what the ad says, I DO NOT give lessons in my home or my student's home. I give lessons online and at public libraries (or other public areas) only. If you have special needs that require a more private area, please let me know and we can make further arrangemets

Details

The first lesson may not be a true lesson, depending on your skill level; if you're getting tutoring because you are struggling on learning the topic, it will be an evaluation for me to get a better idea on what your skill level is, and see what we need to work on. We will get a plan for your lessons, which may change over time depending on how you respond to it. This evaluation is free of charge. If you are getting tutoring because you want a private teacher, and you have never learned the subject before, then your first lesson will be a true first lesson, with a couple minutes tailoring your lesson plans to your learning style.
I do charge a travelling fee, since gas prices are so high. It will be an extra five dollars for any distance over 10 miles, 10 dollars for 20, 15 for 30, and so on. We can always discuss bundle options if you or your child needs tutoring in more than just one subject (e.g. English grammar and Latin). We can also discuss travel pricing and discounts if both you and I are travelling to meet, to accommodate everyone in this season of inflation.
