About Meg

I graduated with a 1st class MA in Global Literature and Culture from the University of York in February 2022, prior to which I completed my BA in English also at York. Having spent years with my head buried in books and learning the gruelling lessons of how to research, plan, write, edit, and proofread, I have decided to teach what I know!

When I teach, the fantastic skills I developed over the course of my academic journey come together with my in-built people-oriented skillset. Values such as compassion, integrity, and flexibility are the cornerstones of my professional and personal life.

About the lesson

My English lessons are carefully planned to be as engaging, informative, and beneficial as possible.

Whether you are at the start of your GCSEs or nearing those A-Level exams, English has always been my passion and I am certain I can help. A student can approach me with specific skills to strengthen, such as essay technique, or with aspects of course content that seem daunting or confusing.

I take time to research exam boards, to familiarise myself with their mark schemes, and to read examiners’ feedback for previous years. This approach helps me to provide students with an excellent quality of teaching that can ease examination anxiety by making the course requirements more comprehensible, and therefore more achievable!

As a tutor, I actively nurture an open and communicative environment. This includes, for example, asking for feedback on which aspects of the lessons my student found most useful and engaging to then inform my planning and delivery of future lessons. We will initiate this process in our free introductory lesson: I will ask the student to create short and long-term goals. I have found this a great way of maintaining motivation and focus.

I can tutor on a breadth of English Language subjects including children’s language development, sociolinguistic theory, and the history of language change. Creative writing is also a strength of mine: it featured in my academic choices at the University of York and continues to be one of my main hobbies. The English Language lessons I offer reflect the diversity of this subject. A session could feature a “true or false” terminology quiz, a proofreading exercise, or even an analytical activity that revisits a piece of the student’s childhood writing!

Perfect! Meg was amazing, she quickly gained rapport with us as parents and our son. I listened in on many lessons and found that Meg was making the lessons fun, well structured and most of all engaged our son with her method of asking questions and working through things to get him to reach answers and enjoying the text as they went through content. We would definitely recommend her and we thank her for helping our son.

I was delighted with Rawdah's engagement today and the extent of her knowledge on word-level analysis (grammar, word class etc.) which will prove very helpful as we continue with Romeo and Juliet. Since she seemed to enjoy the clip we watched from Gnomeo & Juliet, perhaps Rawdah can watch this fun animated film for homework this week to support her understanding of the play's overarching themes and plot. Keep up the good work! :)

A great customer/parent, communicative and agreeable. First lesson with student was good, analysing poetry is a tricky skill but she worked really hard and told me when she didn't understand something. Looking forward to our next session and receiving the piece of writing I set as homework!
