My approach is to first understand where the student stands in terms of understanding the concept and pick from there to build fundamental solid base, followed by teaching complicated concepts.
Once a student is sure of concept then attitude towards solving problems becomes much more interesting and challenging.
The last thing I make sure is teaching them time management
