About Jenifer

We will work together to transform you into a confident and proficient writer and reader. We will creatively collaborate to analyze literature, discover that the English language can be fun, find your voice and create your expression through the written word. It is my goal for you to find joy in the process of reading and writing and to see yourself as a smart, capable and self-assured student.

About the lesson

I care deeply about the mental health of youth, and I think most students are insecure about their writing skills. I would make it a priority to listen to my students and learn about what they are excited and passionate about, and I would incorporate that subject matter into our time together. I would be sure to encourage my students and genuinely celebrate their accomplishments, however incremental. I would also emphasize that writing is a process and that there is joy in the experience.

I am a product of, "Bloom's Taxonomy," and I structure lesson plans accordingly: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation. My favorite part of the Taxonomy, I confess, is, "Synthesis," as I love when students create and bring new life to the lesson.

For these 6th-12th grade students, I would begin a lesson by writing simple sentences with a subject and predicate, based on the students' lives and general observations. We would then build on how to connect sentences and thoughts. I am a grammar nerd, and I especially love structuralist methods. For example, to teach about prepositions, I like to use the sentence, "The plane went _____ the cloud." With the exception of the word, "of," we would brainstorm any words that could fit in the blank and then identify them as prepositions.

I really enjoy the company of kids, and I love teaching. My youngest is graduating in June and off to college, and I am now available to pursue my passion. I absolutely loved helping our son with his college application essays, and through this process, he said that I gave him, "the best English class he has ever had." (He will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.)

The impact of working one-on one and in small groups is so rewarding to me. The thought of focusing on content and not classroom behaviors is extremely appealing, as well. I am excited to be a part of your team!
