About Tom

I am an early career psychologist (provisionally registered) practising in Melbourne. Having been through the academic psychology pathway, I understand the hurdles that can arise as you venture through a seemingly endless number of topics and fields of study.
I have a strong passion for supporting people to achieve their best academic results to progress through the very competitive psychology pathway.

My academic background:
- Master of Professional Psychology - Monash University
- Advanced Graduate Diploma of Psychology - Monash University
- Bachelor of Psychological Science - ACAP
- Diploma of Counselling - ACAP

I achieved a HD for my fourth-year thesis and the highest grade in my research group at Monash University for my results section and data analysis.

Find out more about Tom

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in psychology began throughout VCE and has grown ever since. I have always loved the opportunity to share my knowledge and help make university studies a little less daunting.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have a special interest in helping students with their assignment and thesis writing. However, I generally structure sessions based on the needs of the student and allow them to guide the session so that they get the most value out of our time.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had many great role models throughout my significant time at university, each impacting me in their own way. Through tutoring, I aim to pass these lessons on with the hope that they can help others, as they have me.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe the most essential quality for a tutor is the ability to explain concepts in simple terms and in multiple ways. If a tutor has the ability to easily and effectively communicate concepts, they can then facilitate the greatest amount of learning in the shortest amount of time. As students are generally on a tight budget, providing this type of value is incredibly important, both morally and ethically.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At university, hard work pays off.
I dropped out of year 11 maths due to the belief that I would never be good with numbers. However, shortly into my psychology studies I was inevitably confronted with statistics. This was incredibly intimidating for me and I thought that I would never pass.
Fast forward a few years and I achieved the highest grade in my cohort at Monash University for the data analysis and results section of my thesis.
If you work hard enough at something and accept that the value of an outcome is dependent on the effort and difficulty involved, university becomes much less daunting… and much more enjoyable.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My particular passion is in therapy and I am working towards my clinical psychology registration.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I have a strong passion for helping students make the most of their studies and reducing the stress that can be associated.
