About Andrea

Hi! I am Andrea, an eager learner that just earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manchester.

I start giving tuition intermittently since my Bachelor (7 years ago), continuing through my Master as well during my PhD as lab demonstrator and Mentor. In the latter, I have been responsible to supervise 4 Master students during their 2 months research project, essential to earning their degree. They all succeed.

Having spent the last 9 years in the University, continuously learning as a student (Bachelor, Master and PhD) as allowed me to realise how important it is to develop a correct learning approach. Indeed, what I found often missing in normal classes, is the one to one interaction that sometimes is needed to explain the same concept from a different perspective. Indeed, everyone is different, and we definitely have (scientifically demonstrated ) different way to learn. Even one sentence, or a single example, can be enlighting for one but not for another. Of course, for obvious reason, a teacher in a normal class cannot tailor the same concept for every single student that, at the same time, might feel intimated in asking questions.

That's where I can help. I will deliver a student tailored class in which all the weak points, easy to deal in a stress-free tutor-student environment, will allow to reach the objectives with ease and confidence, essential for the student's success and self-esteem. I still remember with a smile one of my first tutoring (my cousin) going for a 4/10 mark (Italy system) to over 8.5 and enjoying the very last class of it.

I have also more than 3 years of experience in Cuban salsa dance and travelling around Europe to assist international festivals to learn from the best Cuban salsa dancer in the world. Cuban salsa is one of the most famous Latin dance with a unique blend of energy and vitality. Its energy attracted me since the beginning and I would be more than happy to teach you some figures to be ready to show off on the dance floor.

On weekdays I work in Preston, hence I might meet you in Manchester centre every day from 6:00 pm onwards (depending on the distance or if you want me to come to yours). During the weekend from 10 am to 3pm, should not be an issue and specific time (even above the 3pm if arranged properly) can be agreed. More than happy with skype classes as well!

About the lesson

Before accepting a work I need to know what are the goals in terms of: 1) objective (e.g., I want to be able to solve second-degree equations) 2) time available (e.g., 1 month) 3) current gap (e.g., not able to solve first degree equations).

Based on the above I design a program with topics to cover, exercises and activities (e.g., can the student find a solution to an exercise without knowing the solution, sometimes is possible). Mistakes will be encouraged in a relaxed and slow pace tutor-student environment. Indeed, for the student is really important to not fell pressurized ad especially to see in the tutor someone there to help, rather than an authority. That's why I am always put the effort into creating a relaxed atmosphere, especially if the student is of young age.

I prefer giving classes to secondary education level students (11 to 16) regarding math. All ages regarding Italian. For Italian I am also a Udemy instructor with almost 1000 students and a 4.87/5 rating for my course.

Durig the class I usually alternate "high intensity" activity such as learning a new theorem (or a new verbal tense) with more relaxed activities such as exercises (e.g., apply the theorem in a specific contest or free speaking about a subject that the student likes). I also design exercise that the students need to undertake during the week and invite to submit the solutions via email so these can be discussed in the next class allowing the students to practice even when I am not around. I also use (for language mainly) interactive resources that can be found i the web to increase the quality ad the benefits from my classes.
