About Lily

I come from a Maths-driven family. Both my mother and brother studied the subject at university. Growing up, we would sit at the dinner table and conversations would tend to inevitably turn to statistics or mathematical principles. Having been placed in a lower set at school, I felt a little clueless and a little overwhelmed. I understand the pressure and the fear that people have when it comes to maths.

However, I also know it is not so simple as "some people just can't do maths". I went from fearing the subject, to getting an A* in it at A-Level. I even had the confidence to apply statistical maths (notoriously the hardest part of the Maths A-Level course) in my EPQ research project (which also received an A*). In fact, I chose one of my modules at university to be in analytical politics (where we use statistical maths to asses different states).

I am passionate about the subject, and have the confidence that my tutoring will help others grow a passion too.

About the lesson

I once went through Maths tutoring myself at the start of Secondary school. I had no confidence in my abilities and was terrified of lessons. I truly empathise with those that have the same reactions. Through tutoring I learned not only math's basic principles, but how to enjoy maths and no longer fear it! Several years later, I found myself choosing A-Level Maths (receiving an A*) and then using applied maths (notoriously the hardest part of Maths A-Level) to carry out statistical tests for my EPQ (which also received an A*). I have first-hand experience of the impact a non-judgemental, and fun, tutoring style can have on a student. I hope to build on this in my sessions.

I have extensive experience teaching. I spent the past year teaching English as a Foreign Language in Senegal. I started off shadowing a teacher, to then, 2 months later teaching classes of up to 67 students on my own. With only blackboard and chalk, I learned to be a creative teacher using games to learn. In my spare time, I also tutored girls who could not afford school. These were much smaller classes and I learned how to adapt my teaching to the type of learner the student was: visual; auditory; kinesthetic; and reading/writing. I taught students from the age of 9 to 19 years old.

I have a flexible schedule. Generally, I will offer at least one, 1 hour sessions during the working week. These session are for those feeling they need a supportive tutor to help them build their confidence in the subject. I will be able to tutor throughout the academic year.
