About Johnathan

My name is Johnathan, I have been drumming in Church, from five years old, here in London & in the Caribbean. I am self-taught and had the opportunity to be mentored from a young age by my stepfather “Sonny Akpan” the lead percussionist Of “The Funkees”. I’ve been teaching for the last 18 months and it's something I’ve grown to love while sharing the knowledge I have and re-learning the instrument with the student. I can help, if you want to learn to play your favourite song or sharpen your skills to get yourself more gigs, or maybe you just wanna explore the Drumkit from the grassroots. Whatever you want to learn, in each lesson we will be sure to cover technique, Listening While Playing & building confidence behind the Drumkit, & most of all having fun.

About the lesson

For my lessons I have my own lesson plan I follow and alter for each student after I pinpoint what their main reason for learning drums is. Lessons usually start with a 5-10 min warm up of the entire body, mainly to loosen up the limbs and the mind from the outside world. Explaining the importance of stretching. Then working through some light rudiments for a little bit. We can then get into the focus points of the lesson, If that’s working on a song then we can break it down and then work on fitting it all together, or the student can play what they know and we work on improving the technique of what they already know. If they are beginners then we can start learning the names of the Drumkit and get them to play easy grooves, focusing on letting them grasp the idea of all of the limbs working individually but together at the same time. After this I usually incorporate an activity that is still focusing on what we’re learning but a bit more of a laugh. This usually loosens them up more and helps us stay fresh and inspired. Depending on the age group we can get back into the groove/song breakdown or work on some more rudiments that are more directed to challenge the student and can be worked on as homework. We can unwind with light stretching and talking about challenges in the lesson and plans for the next.

Johnathan has been such a great and trustworthy teacher as he has given me nothing but patience on my drumming journey. I’ve had trouble with a few bad habits when it comes to playing/practice routines and he’s taken time to show me how it’s all in the little details! Starting from scratch to then apply it to what I already know. It’s been hard finding a teacher that listens to what I need as a player, doesn’t overshow or micromanage the lessons. Would 100% recommend to anyone who really wants to develop their style and stand out from the rest!
