About Dr Liam
My research interests focus on language, mind and creativity, and have examined the genealogy of studies on linguistic creativity from Kant to contemporary analyses in cognitive science over the last number of years. My book 'Kant’s Place' is in press with De Gruyter, while related outputs are appearing in journals like 'Kant-Studien'. A second book 'Kant and the Foundations of Contemporary Linguistics' is under contract with Routledge and articles from this project are appearing in journals like 'Forum for Modern Language Studies'. Developing my research further, my new project 'Creative Imagination in Action: Studying Meaning, Concepts and the Epigenetic Mind in Irish-Medium Primary Schools' offers a new theory of how mental states that generate content beyond the limits of determinate rule-governed conceptualization are meaningful, and in an environment never studied before within these contexts.

My aim when teaching is to map my methods to central tenets in philosophy itself. After all, a successful student of philosophy is one who can think critically. Therefore, I am interested in developing a student’s ability to analyze philosophical works, so that they can identify premises, inferences and conclusions in any given argument. I also encourage students to continually improve their skills by developing critiques on the strengths and weaknesses of module content and to think creatively about how they could do it better. Therefore, at the center of my teaching philosophy is an active learning approach placed within a welcoming environment that encourages student participation. Having taught philosophy since 2014, I see teaching as an artful discipline that requires ongoing refinement. I like to keep my skillset invigorated by continued reflection, discussion with colleagues, attending seminars on best teaching methods, and by mentoring students from the undergraduate to PhD candidate.
