The digestive system is like a long road that food travels through. 1. Mouth: Food goes in and gets chewed up. Saliva in the mouth also helps in digestion of food and making the bolus easy to pass. 2. Esophagus: Food slides down into the stomach. 3. Stomach: Food mixes with special juices that break it down. There are the following gastric juices which help in digestion of food: Here are the main gastric juices that help digest food: 1. Pepsin: Breaks down proteins into smaller peptides. 2. Gastric amylase: Breaks down carbohydrates (starches) into simpler sugars. 3. Gastric lipase: Breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. 4. Mucus: Protects the stomach lining from acid and helps mix food with digestive enzymes. 5. Hydrochloric acid: Creates an acidic environment that activates pepsin and helps break down food. 4. Small intestine: Nutrients get absorbed into the bloodstream. 5. Large intestine: Water gets absorbed, and what's left becomes waste. 6. Anus: Waste comes out of the body. That's the basic journey of food through the digestive system!
