Teaching philosophy -
Daniel Finn Philosophy is a description of your goals and beliefs as a teacher
1. What is your philosophy of teaching?
A. Why do I teach?
I find it rewarding and challenging. It awakens passion in my soul. Teaching helps me to feel worthwhile and useful. Educating others provides an ongoing creative thought process of connecting with the students—effective learning, a never ending objective.
B. What will students learn from taking my classes?
My goals are to enlighten them about the connections between past and present. To strive in infusing creativity, analysis, synthesizing, critical thinking, in short different ways of understanding the world.
C. How do I teach?
I am aware of student’s variety of learning styles. I incorporate technology, group work, varied teaching methods i.e. lecturing, pair share, writing, powerpoint, timelines, Socratic questioning etc.
D. How do I know if I am meeting my objectives?
I create goals for the particular course and assessments to meet those standards.
Concrete example: Objective: Understanding of Gilded Age multiculturalism
Assessment: Respond to the four-part question. For each area, the minimum requirement is twelve sentences. Provide detail.
Pick two cohorts that emigrated from Eastern Europe and settled in New York City. What were their experiences settling in America i.e. work, prejudice, health, and education?
2. Student philosophy of learning
I believe that all students can learn, but how they learn largely depends on their prior knowledge, the method of instruction with which they learn most successfully, and their attitude toward learning. Below is part of a student learning philosophy.
Lectures don’t motivate active learning does. I believe that whoever is doing is learning.
I believe learning is social and should happen in a community through investigations, experiments, questions, and conversations.
The learner should have an active role in choosing both the content and the method of their learning.
