About Jessica

I’ve always really enjoyed teaching and watching the development of students interests and abilities as they start to figure out and enjoy what they’re passionate about. When doing some work experience, I became much more aware of how interactions between students and teachers/mentors can be crucial to the learning development of the students, their confidence levels, and overall work ethic. I really want to try and improve student’s confidence in themselves and their learning as I believe it can help make going through school much easier. I’d like the opportunity to help other students enjoy and benefit from their education by easing any concerns or issues they may be having, and hopefully act as a support network, allowing them to try and explore their educational interests a little bit more.

About the lesson

I tend to adapt teaching and studying techniques to the individual student as I found that, personally, set methods do not work for everyone and that learning can be more enjoyable if the student helps to form their own learning preferences. The first session would cover the areas of difficulty in the subject(s) and would be an opportunity for me and the student to work out what kind of methods have and haven’t worked well in the past.

I personally like to use a mixture of discussion and note taking to help understand and retain information better, and will most likely use this combination in a lesson unless an alternative preference is discussed. Lessons would be around 60 - 90 minutes. I would suggest lessons be no longer than 90 minutes as concentration levels tend to start to waver but anything less than 20-30 minutes can sometimes be difficult to fit in a decent amount of content.

I am currently working towards a teaching qualification in secondary school history but have experience with tutoring from various opportunities in high school, college and university. Over the last five years, I have also assisted in local music centres sitting with a range of ages (from 5-15), particularly the younger members, in helping them through the initial few sessions by giving them support in learning the music and meeting other members of the group.

I have experience adapting to all ages so my lessons are available to ages from 5-18. I am happy to take on a range of primary school subjects, and English and History at GCSE and A Level.
