About John

I am a dedicated Mathematics teacher with 14 years of classroom experience, including 6 years in the UK and 8 years internationally. Teaching Mathematics has been my greatest passion throughout this time. I thrive on the dynamic energy of the classroom, where every day brings surprises and opportunities for meaningful interactions with students. While I love the collaborative and vibrant environment of teaching groups, I also have a deep appreciation for one-to-one tutoring. It allows me to make a profound difference in a short time, tailoring my approach to meet individual needs. Tutoring provides a unique opportunity to deliver a level of personal attention that isn’t always possible in larger groups, enabling students to achieve their full potential. Teaching and tutoring have given me the privilege of helping students succeed, gain confidence, and develop a genuine love for mathematics. Whether in the classroom or through personalised tutoring sessions, I am driven by the joy of empowering each student to achieve their best and discover new possibilities through mathematics.

About the lesson

As the Head of Mathematics at The British School Rio de Janeiro in Barra, I bring a specialised focus on IB and Cambridge IGCSE qualifications, backed by 14 years of teaching experience. Having taught the complete Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation courses, I’ve guided hundreds of students to success in their exams and Internal Assessments. My teaching style is highly efficient—each hour of tutoring is a full hour of focused maths. With a wealth of resources, including various question banks, a pen tablet, worksheets, course books, and calculator emulators, I customise each lesson to meet the specific needs of each student. Working with only a handful of students allows me to provide focused, personalised attention; I make contact prior to each lesson to tailor our session and share PDFs of worked solutions and other relevant resources, organised in well-maintained Google Drives, ensuring students have everything they need for success in mathematics.
