About Zachary

Why I enjoy Tutoring :
At its core, ‘learning’ is founded on curiosity. Whether it be in Mathematics or the Humanities, the universal trait that defines all scholars is a desire to explore and understand the unknown. For me, this ‘curiosity’ manifests most prominently in my study of Literature. More specifically, how, but more importantly, why, authors write stories, poems and plays. Storytellers invite us into worlds where we can exist beyond ourselves to observe, dissect, and ponder our individual and collective lives. In these worlds, we can filter out the distracting ‘noise’ of reality and explore events, people, and ideas in ways that would otherwise be inaccessible. This ancient interrelationship between humanity and storytelling fascinates me, and is why I not only enjoy studying English, but also teaching it.

My own experience and challenges during the HSC:
The HSC is, as many would expect a challenging experience. Over the course of the four terms I set myself the goal of beating my Year 11 predicted ATAR (90) by 5 points or more. To achieve this I employed numerous methods to ensure I stretched and challenged the boundaries of my academic potential. The first step was undertaking Extension 2 English and History Extension. Both courses include Major Work style assessments which differ from conventional HSC examinations. Whilst I found the novelty and independence of both courses to be challenging, the autonomy they offered in relation to my learning, aided my performance across all my subjects. Another example of me stretching and challenging myself was the study schedule I made at the start of each term. As a member of both the 1st VIII in the summer and the 1st XI in the winter, the time I had to study was limited and often clashed with training hours. However, by creating a schedule I was able to allocate time for 20-25 hours of study each week. Despite the challenge of juggling sporting ambitions with my academic goals, I was still able to achieve my aim of beating my Year 11 predicted ATAR. After just one term my ‘predicted’ had increased to a 95, and by the end of Trials, I was heading into the HSC with a predicted ATAR of 97.
