About Wendy
I am a certified teacher for grades 1-6, and have 11 years of teaching experience in whole and small group instruction in all academic areas. I have become very versed at using various virtual platforms, as I have taught through the past year of the Covid crisis. I have recently moved to NYC, and am looking to continue to fulfill my passion for teaching through more one on one tutoring, or small home-based group instruction. I am creative, and enjoy coming up with "real life" ways to teach children, and help them make discoveries about the world. I believe teaching young children is the most important job there is, and consider it a true privilege to be in the education industry. I have three grown kids of my own, so I fully relate to the struggle of maintaining balance and perspective as children grow and become more involved in extracurricular and social activities. I will work to help manage academic responsibilities, while encouraging and promoting a well-rounded approach to educating the whole child.

My one to one and small group teaching approach is student specific, with emphasis placed on the learning style and preferences of the child(ren). I think it is of utmost importance that students are fully engaged in lessons, and the best way to accomplish this is to lean on methods, resources, and materials that appeal to the interests and learning styles of the individual student(s). For example, when working with a student who is involved in gymnastics, I would use reading materials that emphasize the sport, incorporate the scoring system into math problems, and use visuals of the sport to support instruction in any applicable area. I also believe that data should play a role with the pace and direction of instruction. Using assessment results to inform about content that needs to be revisited is an integral component in ensuring students are fully grasping essential material. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, the most important element to a successful learning environment is personal connection. I believe all children need to feel that their teacher "gets" them and connects with who they are as a person rather than just who they are as a student. I take the time to know all my students on this level, and enjoy educating the whole child!
