About Boris

I am a bilingual English-Spanish tutor with a lifelong passion for languages and teaching. Born in the United States to an English mother and an Argentine father, and raised across the U.S., the U.K., and Argentina, I grew up immersed in multiple languages and cultures, which shaped my love for communication and intercultural understanding. I have been teaching English and Spanish formally since 2012, but my experience goes back to childhood, guiding family members and friends in learning and practicing languages. Over the years, I have taught students of all ages and backgrounds, including neurodivergent learners, helping them gain confidence, fluency, and enjoyment in language learning.
Alongside languages, I hold a master’s degree in Biology, with expertise in ecology, genetics, microbiology, and environmental science, and I have taught science, math, and related subjects to learners of various levels. I am fluent in French and Italian, and I continue studying Chinese and Japanese, constantly exploring new ways to understand and connect with languages and cultures. My teaching philosophy is guided by curiosity, creativity, and a desire to help students think independently, communicate effectively, and enjoy the learning process.

My language lessons are primarily conversational, emphasizing learning through real examples and meaningful interaction rather than memorization. I adapt each lesson to the student’s level, goals, and interests, exploring topics that are useful for travel, work, academic study, music, scientific reading, translation, or everyday communication. I enjoy integrating culture, history, and personal interests into our discussions to make learning engaging and memorable. I have experience teaching students of all ages and diverse learning styles, including neurodivergent learners, and I strive to create a calm, supportive environment that fosters confidence, curiosity, and independent thinking. My goal is always to guide students in developing practical language skills while making the learning process enjoyable and empowering.

Find out more about Boris

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in language teaching from a young age. I grew up partly in Argentina, and everybody wanted to learn things in English; therefore, the exchange of information became very frequent in my early life. As time went by, it became a useful tool.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach several subjects: English, Spanish, Math, Algebra, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Language-wise, I enjoy focusing on conversation, trying to immerse my students in real-life situations that they may find when travelling, working, or getting to know people. I love how stimulating it can be when two minds work together, branching out and going all over the place.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In my family, there’s sort of a teaching legacy. My parents and my grandfather, in particular, who shared knowledge as a way of life, inspired me. He had this saying I loved, "We go to school to learn how to use the library."
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Trying to follow your own teaching way with devotion, discipline, curiosity, patience, and empathy.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Studying with other people, saying things out loud, or learning out in the field while adding movement can be great ways to assimilate concepts. Try out different approaches to learn things, paths that will lessen your anxiety. Sitting still in a chair for long periods of time can be one of the biggest contributors to losing interest in what you’re learning.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some of my challenges have been not feeling good enough or ready to teach certain topics, resulting in missed opportunities. Others have to do with publicity.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I like teaching in general; the exchange of information is very fulfilling, not to mention how much you learn in the process. I also have a strong love for music, travelling, and going on treks, stopping constantly to examine plants, bugs, and stones (imagine the thrill of finding a fossil! I’m also on the lookout for birds.

Learning complex languages is another big passion; I’m fascinated by Chinese and Japanese.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

As I mentioned earlier, teaching is very fulfilling. It’s like watching plants grow, but a step further. It’s very gratifying to see how the teamwork between teacher and student develops into an achievement, a purpose.

I like to generate passion for learning and curiosity in my students.
I consider myself to have a lot of knowledge to share, and can do so in more than one language (so I guess that helps, haha).
