About James

Hi, having struggled with Mathematics at school, (a tutor would have made life easier) I eventually completed a Degree in Mathematics with the Open University achieving a 2.2. I am new to tutoring after helping my children and friends' children, coaching them at GCSE and A level. My teaching style is old school; for me mathematical ideas and history are important for a good understanding of mathematics. As well as the "how to" we also need to understand "why" in mathematics. It is a tutor's job to make sure that subject knowledge is correctly built, on proper foundations, for good understanding. Practice is important for making things automatic, which in turn allows clearer thinking when problem solving. I will tutor in the Sheffield area with a mixture of face to face (at some point in the future), and online sessions. Hope this helps, and I look forward to hear from you. Jim. He has always had an interest and skill in mathematics and tutored two of my children during their Mathematics GCSE and A level exams. He was caring and patient teaching them and I am sure that this was the reason for their success during their exams.
