About Sissi

Hi, I’m Sissi. I was born and raised in Beijing, now based in UK Surrey.

One thing that has shaped me from an early age is the academic environment I grew up in. My mum is a professor at Beijing Normal University, and I also have close family members with backgrounds at Peking University and Beijing Institute of Technology. Education has always been a natural part of my life.

Having spent the first 30 years of my life in Beijing, so what I bring to my lessons goes beyond vocabulary and grammar. I can also help you understand how Mandarin is actually spoken in everyday life, how people express themselves in different situations, and the small cultural details that are often difficult to pick up from a textbook.
I’m especially interested in helping adult learners who want to use Chinese in real life — whether that’s for everyday conversations, travel, work, or communicating more naturally with Chinese colleagues and clients.

About the lesson

【Adult Beginners】
If you’re starting from scratch, I’ll help you build a solid foundation without making Chinese feel more complicated than it needs to be.
We can work on pronunciation, tones, useful vocabulary and basic sentence structures, but I don’t want you to spend months learning Chinese without actually speaking it.
From the beginning, I’ll encourage you to use what you’ve learned in simple, real conversations. As your vocabulary grows, we’ll gradually make those conversations longer and more natural.
The pace will depend on you. Some students prefer a clear and structured approach, while others learn better through conversation and repetition. We can find the balance that works best for you.

【Speaking & Everyday Chinese】
This is a good fit if you already know some Chinese, but still find it difficult to speak naturally or respond quickly in conversation.
We can talk about everyday life, travel, food, work, social situations, or topics you’re genuinely interested in. I’ll correct you where necessary, but I’ll also explain how a native speaker might phrase the same idea differently.
Over time, the aim is for you to rely less on translating in your head and start developing a more natural feel for the language.

【Chinese for Work & Business】
I have experience working in both Chinese and British professional environments, so I can help you with Chinese for real workplace situations.
We can work on meetings, networking, presentations, client communication and conversations with colleagues, while also looking at the cultural differences behind the way people communicate at work.
