About Dolores
Hello. I'm Ms. Smith and I am looking forward to meeting you. I believe in helping students learn the way they learn best; whether that means more auditory, visual, tactual, or kinesthetic. I am also a firm believer in knowing how the brain works. It frustrates me when teachers or adults try to teach young people and they do not pay attention to the ways the students learn. For example, when a student is stressed or anxious, their brain can't receive new information until they calm down. Throughout my experience as a teacher, I have learned how to differentiate by using student's interests, to incorporate hands-on experiences, and to use color when possible. Color stimulates the brain (and helps students develop executive functioning and organizational skills). Tutors are in unique positions to become consistent cheerleaders that sometimes teachers do not have the one-on-one time to be. Relationships are one of the most crucial components of student learning. I like getting to know my students so we can build relationships and conquer our goals together.

First, I review the basics before moving on or building on skills or knowledge gained. Then I introduce the skill. I provide guided practice and then independent practice. If the student doesn't feel confident in the skill we remediate with flash cards, learning games, or worksheets. We take an assessment to make sure we have achieved the goal. If not, I reteach. If we have, we move on to the next skill. I like to have students complete a questionnaire that helps me know their learning style. What sets me apart from others is that the special ed background helps me to remember that all kids learn but they might learn differently and we need to be open to that. I believe in building relationships that foster positive learning experiences.
