  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Spanish is my mother tongue language and I´ve learnt English as a second language since I was in primary school, I´ve travelled to different English-speaking countries and lived for 2 years in Ireland. I love learning about cultures.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Noam Chomsky, known as the father of modern linguistics, has been a source of inspiration to me. He helped me understand the way we learn, which in turn gave me insight into how my students acquire language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language you particularly like?

I´m fascinated by words, phrases and traditions but the ones that I like the most are those that are intriguing and keep me wondering about their origins. Halloween is one of them, the origins are so remote!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking any language is important to communicate our ideas, interact and be part of a community. Expressing ourselves accurately makes it possible for others to see through ourselves, get to know us and respect us. Speaking is a skill that students struggle with the most and therefore, the skill I focus on my lessons. My main goal is to give the student the opportunity to speak making use of all the resources they have been learning.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

When it comes to Spanish, sounds can be challenging, especially those of the letters "r" & "j". Additionally, Spanish has more tenses than English and students need to learn more verb forms. For sounds, I suggest doing a lot of listening and repetition, songs, videos, podcasts, whatever input and the more you listen, the faster you become familiar with these sounds. For tenses, I suggest writing sentences of your own, using all the forms and subjects, having a poster in some area of the house where you can see it and building your sentences while you are having your morning coffee. These tips are also useful for English learners with sounds they struggle with, like vowels, and irregular past verbs for example.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning English at a young age, I was 17 and I decided to travel to the U.S. I happened to come across a guy and have a chat on the street, and he said "Your English is really good, you sound like a dictionary". It was funny because I didn't know if this was a compliment or not, and actually it was. Thus, I realised that studying from books gives you the tools for communicating effectively, but it is always necessary to put those books away and see what real people in the real world are saying, what words they are using and which ones they are not. Fortunately, nowadays we´ve got social media at hand reach.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travelling to different countries has helped me see the difference in slang, vocabulary, word choices, culture, attitudes and personalities. As much as universal a greeting can be, people do it differently, "you good?", "not bad", "allright buddy?", "gal" "mate", and many others, geographic distances make choices be different. The same in Spanish countries, "hola ¿qué tal?", "¿todo bien?", "que vaya bien", are first choice in some Spanish-speaking countries but not in others.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I´ve been working with Superprof for many years now, my students have always chosen me and stayed with me for long periods until they reached their goals. They like the variety of activities I include and that they see a structure in their studying, books are only guides and a lot of other materials are brought into the classroom. Digital tools and games give life to the lesson and a lot of speaking takes place. Students feel comfortable, and we build a strong and long-lasting relationship, even when our sessions have finished, we keep in touch and we even get to know each other when they travel to Barcelona or I travel to their countries 😊
