*1. DEFINITION OF CELL*
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. All living things are made of cells. It is the smallest unit that can carry out all life processes.
*2. SCIENTISTS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO CELL DISCOVERY*
- *Robert Hooke (1665):* English scientist who first discovered and named "cells" when he observed cork under microscope. He saw honeycomb-like compartments.
- *Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1674):* First to observe living cells (bacteria, protozoa) using his improved microscope. Father of Microbiology.
- *Matthias Schleiden (1838):* German botanist who stated all plants are made of cells.
- *Theodor Schwann (1839):* German zoologist who stated all animals are made of cells.
- *Rudolf Virchow (1855):* Added that all cells come from pre-existing cells - "Omnis cellula e cellula".
*3. THE CELL THEORY (Modern)*
1. All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the basic unit of life.
3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
4. The cell contains hereditary information (DNA) which is passed from cell to cell.
5. All cells have similar chemical composition and metabolic activities.
*4. STRUCTURE OF THE CELL*
There are two main types: Plant and Animal cells. Both have organelles suspended in cytoplasm.
*Key Organelles and Their Functions:*
Organelle Function
**Cell Membrane** Controls what enters/leaves the cell. Protects cell.
**Cell Wall (Plants only)** Gives rigidity, shape and protection. Made of cellulose.
**Nucleus** Controls all activities. Contains DNA/chromosomes. "Brain of the cell".
**Cytoplasm** Jelly-like fluid where all organelles are suspended. Site of chemical reactions.
**Mitochondrion** Powerhouse - produces energy (ATP) via respiration.
**Ribosome** Site of protein synthesis (protein factory).
**Endoplasmic Reticulum** Rough ER: transports proteins. Smooth ER: makes lipids.
**Golgi Body** Packages and distributes proteins.
**Chloroplast (Plants only)** Site of photosynthesis. Contains chlorophyll.
**Vacuole** Stores water, food, waste. Large in plants, small in animals.
**Lysosome** Contains enzymes for digestion, destroys worn-out organelles.
**Centriole (Animals only)** Helps in cell division.
