About Vivian
Who I Am as a Teacher:
As a teacher, I am warm and encouraging and can foster excitement in all kinds of students. I understand that many students struggle with the learning process; I have a wealth of study strategies that can help students learn more effectively and form a deeper understanding of their schoolwork. Oftentimes, teachers may move too quickly over key content or explain it in ways that are unintuitive to some students. I help students understand biology from the ground up and ensure that they learn the content in the ways that make the most sense to them individually. A solid foundation is the key to success, and I make sure that students can build this foundation to reach higher levels of understanding in biology.
Credentials:
I am an undergraduate at the University of Toronto studying Cell and Molecular biology and have worked in a research lab at Michigan State University in the department of Pharmacology/Toxicology for three summers.
I received a 5 on the AP biology exam and received the AP Scholar With Distinction award.
I have previously tutored students in the following subjects: Biology, Algebra, Algebra II, Precalculus, Beginner Violin, and Literary Composition 10. Additionally, I used to teach and coach a middle school Science Olympiad team.
I am a university/college application essay editor. My former tutees now attend: the University of Michigan, Rice University, and Michigan State University among others.

I teach middle school and high school biology as well as AP biology. My teaching methodology includes: study and note-taking strategies, textbook learning, visual learning via diagrams and/or charts, use of analogy, memorization strategies (as biology demands) but emphasis on the understanding of theory over memorization (this is how you truly learn!)
My lesson plans usually start with the student pointing out the gap in their knowledge or skillset. Then together, the student and I go through the lesson (via textbook, workbook, homework, past test, or other framework given by the school) and I provide them with information necessary to understand the subject while guiding the student to reach conclusions independently. Throughout the lesson, I call back to prior information to make sure they retain everything being taught, and by the end, I give a quick summary and low stakes quiz over the content.
I understand that every student learns differently. Taking this into consideration, my lesson plans are very flexible and can be adjusted to meet individual needs and preferences.

Details
There's a major monetary barrier to education in the world. I understand that most people charge upwards of $40 for reasonable, educated tutoring services. While the quality of my teaching would typically be associated with such prices, it is against my personal philosophy to charge so much; $40 is not something everyone can afford, and I believe access to education should not be dependent on a student's income or socioeconomic status. I still charge for my services as my time is valuable and I have my own tuition to pay, but I will always keep my services as affordable as possible.
