About Lily

Over the past few months I have been helping students from my secondary school with STEP (an exam used by Cambridge to differentiate between students who achieve A*s). They have provided the following feedback:

"Lily has helped me develop my problem-solving skills by allowing me to make my own mistakes and patiently asking the right questions to let me find my own solutions.
She has taught me some interesting and very useful new methods to solve problems, for example: she showed me a new way to divide polynomials, how to differentiate inverse trig functions and inverse hyperbolic functions.
She is also friendly and made the lessons enjoyable and is very punctual too! We've never missed a lesson and she has always been on time."

“I have received tutoring from Lily in order to prepare me for my STEP 2 exam. Prior to Lily I wasn’t even achieving a grade upon completion of a paper but with Lily’s support I feel I am now able to achieve a 2 in STEP 2. This is with only 2 hours a week for around the past 8 weeks. During this time Lily also helped me with numerous problems that arose whilst I was completing my A levels and had, to the extent of my knowledge, a total understanding of every area of maths we covered. I also found Lily didn’t race ahead and it was very easy to keep up with what she was teaching me as she understood my ability and how best to help me.”

About the lesson

The key to understanding maths is understanding the intuition behind why we learn the processes that are taught, and why those processes work, not to learn by rote to answer the things deemed important.

Most teachers teach maths as a series of 'how's, and their students learn how to gain marks in exams without understanding what they're doing, or why they're doing it. If they encounter something different, they do not have the skills to tackle it.

I teach with a series of 'why's. This enables students to develop a critical approach. They learn the skills to approach new problems, and adapt what they know to tackle them.

Many students have little confidence when approaching mathematics. I do not simply give a student the answer, but guide them towards working it out for themself. This approach gives students the confidence to approach new concepts, whether they are encountered in an exam or as they go about life.

Lily helped me on multiple occasions when I was undertaking a levels in both maths and futher maths. She explains things clearly and is patient when you don't quite understand, and we did many examples of things I didn't get until I could do them easily. I gained alot of confidence in my own ability and felt far happier with the syllabus by the time i took my exams. I would definitely recommend her to anyone else looking for support with their maths.

Details

I charge £25 per hour for GCSE/A level lessons. I increase this to £30 for university entrance excluding STEP, and £40 for STEP and olympiads.

I am happy to negotiate these for group teaching/specific circumstances.
