About James
I’ve spent more than twenty years working in private education, and in that time I’ve learnt that the most meaningful part of my work is helping people grow in confidence. Music has been the constant thread through my life — as a professional singer, a choral director, and now a Director of Music — but teaching is where it becomes something shared.
I teach because I genuinely enjoy seeing students discover what they can do. There’s something special about watching a young singer find their voice, an adult return to the piano after years away, or a student finally understand a theory idea that once felt out of reach. Those moments of clarity and confidence are why I keep doing this.
My lessons are calm, structured and encouraging. I want students to feel comfortable, supported and able to ask questions. Progress doesn’t need to be dramatic; it needs to be steady, musical and enjoyable. When a student feels happy and secure, real learning happens.
I have a PGCE (London) in Secondary Music, a Masters in Performance from the Royal College of Music and hold a Music Degree from the University of Edinburgh. Ultimately, I teach because music is a lifelong companion. Helping someone begin — or continue — that journey is a privilege, and it’s why, after two decades, I still love teaching fellow musicians!

My lessons are student‑centred, structured and encouraging, designed to build solid technique, musical understanding and confidence while keeping learning enjoyable. With over 20 years in private education, I create a calm, supportive environment where students feel able to explore, ask questions and make steady progress.
I specialise in:
• Music theory (Grades 1–5 and GCSE/A‑level support)
• Singing and vocal coaching for developing and confident singers
• Piano for beginners and developing players
• Performance coaching and effective practice strategies
• Scholarship, audition and exam preparation
• Conducting coaching for those new to it or building confidence
Lessons are available in‑person in Cambridge or online, with weekly 30–60 minute sessions recommended for consistent progress. Adult learners are warmly welcomed at all levels.
The first lesson
Your first lesson is relaxed and welcoming. We begin with a conversation about your musical interests, goals and previous experience. I then offer a gentle assessment to identify strengths and next steps.
Together we set:
• Short‑term targets to guide immediate progress
• A longer‑term pathway for exams, auditions, performances or conducting development
You’ll leave the first lesson with a clear sense of direction and a personalised plan.
Teaching experience
I teach children aged 7–18 and adult learners, from beginners to advanced students. My teaching is supportive, confidence‑building and rooted in the belief that steady, enjoyable progress creates lasting musicianship.
