I want to talk about teaching kids to write little plays. Teaching kids to write stories not only helps open up their imaginations, but it teaches them to think, talk, read, write, and express themselves without even realizing that they're learning reading and writing, since it's fun! I think any kid can create a story good enough to be acted out. With a little encouragement, kids have a lot of imagination.
First, I would ask the kids what kind of movie and TV shows they like. And what are their favorite movies/TV shows? And why they like them?
Once I get their imaginations going, I get them to take pen and paper to begin to create, as I teach the basics of storytelling. I ask:
What kind of main character do they want in the story? Boy, girl, talking pet, talking doll, mom, dad, friend, grandma, grandpa, monster, superhero, etc.
What is the character's name/ what kind of traits, personality, and looks do they have?
What's the best thing about them? The worst thing about them?
What kind of a problem or challenge could this character have.
What place does the story happen in? House, garden, castle, school, other planet, etc.
What other characters do you need to tell the story?
Then I have them divide the story in 3 parts, like a clock, for the beginning, middle, and end. They give each part a heading.
And I ask: what takes place in Part 1, Part 2, Part 3? What might the characters say about the problem and how to solve it in each section?
In the end, does the character solve the problem? Or fail?
These are the basics, but I would draw the kids out with more questions, asking and getting them to expand their imaginations, helping them to flesh out the story with questions, but letting their own imaginations provide the answers. It's a great way to come up with a complete simple story. And (if there are other kids in the class) the kids can cast the roles for their story with other students in the class to get them to act it out. If it's a one-on-one tutor situation, it can also be done with the student and the teacher acting out the various roles.
