About Federico

I grew up in Italy, and like every Italian kid, I spent years being drilled on verb tables at school. Congiuntivo, condizionale, passato remoto, endless columns to memorise and repeat back. I could recite them perfectly and still freeze the moment I had to actually say something.

What annoys me is that this is exactly how Italian is taught to foreigners, too. The same tables, the same order, the same assumption that everyone’s brain works the way an Italian classroom expects. But an English speaker meeting the congiuntivo isn’t facing the problem I was. English barely uses the subjunctive, so the real question isn’t the endings, it’s why Italians reach for that mood at all. Nobody explains that. They just hand you the table.

I know this from both sides. Italian is my mother tongue, but I learned English from a very young age; I’m fluent in Spanish, and I get by in French. So I know which structures will feel alien to you, which ones you already have without realizing it, and exactly which Spanish words look identical to Italian and mean something else entirely.

That’s how I teach: starting from your language, not mine. I’m a native speaker, born and raised in Italy, and I’m starting in Biochemistry at Imperial College London, which has taught me to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently. If an approach isn’t working, I change it rather than repeat it louder.

About the lesson

Ciao, I’m Federico, an Italian native speaker born and raised in Italy, now starting Biochemistry at Imperial College London.

My approach is simple: you learn a language by speaking it, not by memorising verb tables. From the very first lesson, I get you talking, even if it’s messy at first, because that’s where real progress happens. I build every lesson around what you actually need, whether that’s ordering confidently in a trattoria, holding your own with your partner’s family, or nailing an exam paper. Grammar comes in when it’s useful, explained in plain English, never as a lecture.

Lessons run 60 minutes as standard, though I offer 90-minute sessions for exam preparation and 30-minute conversation top-ups for students who want to practice more often. I send a short summary and a few notes after each lesson, so nothing gets lost.

I teach complete beginners through to advanced speakers, from GCSE and A-level students to adults learning for travel, work, family, or pure curiosity. Patient, relaxed, and always with real Italian, the way we genuinely speak it.
