About Carla Hazel

Kia ora! My name is Carla.
I'm originally from the UK, and moved to beautiful Aotearoa 3 years ago to pursue my dream PhD in Marine Biology.
My passion for biology started with a high school teacher who encouraged me to ask questions and explore ideas freely. She showed me that curiosity is where real learning begins. I want to create that same space for students and encourage the next generation of scientists!

My background in research means I understand biology at a deeper level—not just what happens, but why and how. I've found that many students do better when they grasp the underlying logic rather than just memorizing facts, and that's what I aim for.

I live in Wellington with my flat whanau and two beautiful dogs. When not tutoring I enjoy hiking, reading, watching films and (once the weather improves) snorkeling!

About the lesson

My Approach to Tutoring
I work with each student to understand where the gaps or confusion lie, then use a mix of diagrams, practical explanations, and discussion to build understanding. Rather than rushing through content, I take time to explore why biology works the way it does—which is often what makes concepts stick.

I work best when you let me know which topics you'd like to focus on beforehand—this gives me time to prepare materials, so we can dive straight in. Of course, we can also explore other questions that come up during the lesson!

I prefer lessons of at least 60 minutes. This gives us proper time to work through a concept.

My Experience
I have a PhD in Marine Biology, Masters in Genetics, and BSc Honors in Biology, with experience tutoring at university level. Beyond academia I have experience translating complex science into simple ideas, via talks at local clubs, schools, and events.

Flexible & Accessible
I offer both online and in-person lessons. For in-person, I'm happy to come to your home, meet at a library, or find a suitable space. Online works well too if that suits your schedule better.

The first session is free. This allows ample time to discuss your needs, learning style, and goals—and for me to understand where you're at with biology. It's a chance for both of us to see if we work well together before committing to paid lessons. We can also chat about what you'd like to focus on: exam prep, filling knowledge gaps, deepening understanding, or a mix of all three.
