About Sophia

I am a final year PhD student in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester, and since my A levels, I realised I was always good at hitting the top marks in my biology exams (unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for chemistry!). I understand the content, I am familiar with the processes and pathways, and I understand what is helpful in getting the best marks in an exam.

Throughout my undergraduate degree and PhD, I've had to demonstrate and explain science and research to a whole range of audiences, from the general public to academic professionals. And I really love explaining and teaching science to people, and when they realise that they understand it, it is such a gratifying feeling. I firmly believe everyone can understand science, if taken through it at the right pace and I understand it may seem a lot at the start, but once broken down into chunks, biology can become much clearer and manageable.

From my experience, learning biology at GCSE, A level and beyond is a memory game, to ensure intricate biological pathways and complex terminology is retainable for examinations. If you're stuck in an exam and can't remember the word 'sarcomere' being the basic contractile unit of a muscle fibre, there is little to no chance you'll be able to work it out. Everything needs to be memorised in detail beforehand, which takes time, repetition and perseverance!

After discussing with the student or parent personal difficulties with the subject, a typical 1 hour lesson for either biology GCSE or A level students will involve myself initially explaining the content/mechanisms/pathways with figures and diagrams in an easy, comfortable and engaging environment. This will be followed by interactive quizzes or worksheets to consolidate the learning. I encourage questions about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to be asked - no such thing as a stupid question!

Subsequent lessons will review the previous lessons work to ensure there are no further qualms or misconceptions about the content, as well as to consolidate content memory. I will provide little tests at the end of every 10 lessons to confirm everything has been understood and to assess whether the student has any issues or concerns with any of the content.

I believe understanding how to answer exam questions is equally important - too often, students understand the content but lose marks for not hitting the marker's criteria. If the student is happy to, I would love to sit down and go through past papers and examiner's mark schemes from previous years to ensure they are able to answer exam questions with their understanding of the content effectively.
