About Joshua

I believe that tutoring should take a customized approach.

Personally, I am a big fan of collaborative work sessions, where students reach out in advance with your syllabus or specific materials (upcoming homework, previous tests you are trying to understand better, or upcoming exams) that I can go over and come prepared to tackle your questions with an approach focused on the expectations, textbook, and specifics of the course or exam you are studying for. In these situations, I focus on preparing myself in advance to the specific questions you need help with, and come to our tutoring sessions prepared to guide your navigation of homework/example test questions, as well as offer flashcard/concept reinforcement strategies for coursework you understand but want to strengthen.

I am also open to more general concept support. In these situations, in contrast to my approach for specific homework/exam preparation, I prefer to explore the material and your questions together. In these situations, I serve less as a source of the "right/wrong answer", and instead will navigate through textbook and peer-reviewed academic literature with you alongside me. The goal of this approach is to strengthen your understanding of navigating the broader concepts you hope to explore and discuss, while providing examples of how I navigate advanced concepts, including real-time verification of understanding using academic sources, versus relying entirely memorization of concepts. As scientific progress and interdisciplinary research advances, this approach helps students prepare for navigating the professional world, if your goal in tutoring goes beyond passing a specific course.

I encourage students from both perspectives/goals to reach out to me, and we will make sure my tutoring approach fits what you are hoping to get out of our sessions together.

I hold a B.S. from Cornell's Animal Science department, with an academic focus in quantitative genetics, and have 8 years of professional genetics employment.

During my undergraduate degree, I served as a TA for 3 biology courses, and performed 7 semesters of undergraduate research culminating in a research honors thesis.

Upon graduation, I worked for 4.5 years in R&D at a private biotechnology company, specializing in genetic engineering and bioinformatics analyses of microbial strains for industrial biofuels and animal nutrition applications.
Following this, I performed bioinformatics research and clinical specimen processing in a microbiology lab at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine for 3.5 years, working as a research support specialist and training Dartmouth Guarini graduate students in genomics applications to their research.

I am an interdisciplinary researcher with a broad focus in genomics across research applications. I am passionate about basic research, as well as clinical and industrial research applications. My professional experiences necessitate translating genetics concepts to specialized researchers in various disciplines and laypersons, and my undergraduate curriculum and TA-ships are both focused in genetics coursework across animal husbandry, ecology, and human genetics, alongside the practical and ethical considerations when applying these technologies to the real world.

My approach to tutoring is student-specific, and can be tailored to specific coursework or more general aid. I can help navigate specific concepts, and encourage prospective students to reach out with course materials they are struggling with so that I can curate our time together. I can also provide more general tutoring in genetic concepts in both high school courses, and in collegiate biology courses across disciplines/majors.

When reaching out, please let me know if you are looking for help studying for a specific concept or exam, more general guidance across the course of a term, or if you want broader guidance through discussions, concepts/worksheets, and mini-projects outside the immediate demands and materials from your current coursework.

I am not a tutor for standardized test practices, and instead focus on understanding of the underlying concepts you are studying. Whether by helping you understand your coursework by going over materials together, or by expansion of concepts covered in your classes but with examples and materials pulled from outside sources and academic literature, I am here to help you navigate biological concepts at the high school and entry collegiate levels, alongside specific genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics tutoring at upper collegiate levels.
