About Shah
I'm a PhD researcher at SEMM working in the lab of Prof. Nicola Segata, whose group develops MetaPhlAn, HUMAnN, ChocoPhlAn and LEfSe — tools used by metagenomics labs worldwide. My own work is in metagenomics, transcriptomics and genomics, with machine learning applied to microbiome data.
Alongside research, I've taught biology for 7 years. That combination matters: I can explain the biology clearly and show you the code that actually produces the result, rather than one without the other.

I teach bioinformatics from the ground up, and I also help researchers who are stuck mid-project.
Foundations — DNA and the central dogma, sequence alignment, biological databases (NCBI, Ensembl, UniProt), and how to read what a tool is actually telling you.
Sequencing technologies — WGS, WES, RNA-seq, scRNA-seq and shotgun metagenomics: what each one measures, when to use it, and how the data is structured.
Hands-on analysis — working in Linux/bash, Python and R; QC and preprocessing; differential expression; taxonomic and functional profiling; introductory machine learning on omics data.
Project support — if you have your own dataset, a thesis chapter, or a pipeline that isn't running, bring it. We can work through your actual data instead of toy examples.
Suitable for undergraduates, master's and PhD students, and wet-lab researchers moving into computational work. No programming background needed for the foundational track. Lessons are in English, online, and the first one is free so we can map out exactly what you need.
