About Jonathan

I am a full-time biochemistry researcher at a R1 research university. I have extensive experience in high school, AP, and college curricula in molecular biology, biochemistry, mathematics, and computer science. Uniquely, I apply techniques from studying mathematics to biology, which allowed me to easily finish in the top 1% of my advanced college biology classes as a high schooler and self-study a 5 in AP biology as a high school freshman in under a week. I focus on deep, fundamental understanding and the skill to extrapolate an applicable framework to multiple problems. I have tutored since my freshman year in high school, focusing initially on preparing middle school students for the American Mathematics Competition and later for high school students taking trigonometry, precalculus, physics, biology, and other subjects. I additionally tutor undergraduate and graduate students in various advanced laboratory techniques. Many of my students have gotten honor roll for the AMC8 (top 5% nationally), top 10 MATHCOUNTS state placement, and raised their grades as much as three letter grades.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy centers around fundamental understanding of core concepts. Effective learning is necessarily brought about through mastery of the basics, and thus I aim to impart the general skill of logical comprehension and problem-solving techniques over rote memorization.
Depending on material, a typical lesson will cover a section concerning a commonly taught system (e.g. photosynthesis for AP biology, lac operon for introductory college biology, phage lambda promoter system for intermediate college biology) with emphasis on core takeaways and student-guided learning. The end goal is for students to retain mastery of conceptual extrapolation, enabling success with minimal memorization. Lessons will be aimed at learning an overarching framework generally applicable to solving a plentitude of problems, exercised with select problems in the style of AP or college exams.
I have experience teaching a range of students in a range of subjects, and uniquely aim to apply techniques which allowed me to excel in AP biology as a freshman self-studying and complete the majority of college molecular biology coursework placing in the top 1% of classes, with minimal effort by the end of high school.
I will tutor high schoolers, college underclassmen, or advanced middle schoolers aiming to excel in AP biology, introductory, or intermediate college coursework. No previous knowledge of biology is required; although any knowledge would be helpful. Students who are passionate about science are ideal!

He started with a placement exam he wrote himself, then laid out a lesson plan that raised my daughter's AMC8 scores six points! He would start each lesson by outlining a specific technique with an exemplary problem, walking my daughter through it with as much self-exploration as possible, and then practicing the variations & assigning homework problems curated from the AMC and MATHCOUNTS. If his math tutoring is anything to go by, he must be even more stellar at biology!
