About Shelby
My name is Shelby and I am currently pursuing my master's degree in biochemistry with a minor in higher education. During my undergraduate studies, I pursued my bachelor's degree in biology and I ended up discovering my passion for teaching. I volunteered as a tutor in a correctional facility and tutored students in English, math, and reading to prepare them for GED testing. I decided that I wanted to continue teaching in any way that I could, which led me to teaching/tutoring in an afterschool program after graduating from undergrad. I was fortunate to be able to teach young elementary students about the importance of science and reading to learn more about the world around them. Teaching is what I am passionate about because I believe knowledge is meant to be shared and is something that can never be stolen when it is gained. I make it my priority to help feel comfortable, confident and encourage while in the learning environment. I don't believe in intimidating or belittling students because they may not know something because the whole point of tutoring is to help students better understand material and not to punish for not knowing/understanding.

I am a patient tutor who facilitates a comfortable and productive learning environment. I make it a point to teach in the learning style(s) that best suits students and if a student doesn't know what teaching style best works for them, I am happy to help them figure it out. My goal is help students be comfortable with learning material and to help them feel more confident in their academic abilities. When working with new students, I first walk through the subject/learning material to see what a student knows and/or comfortable with so we can get a better idea of what areas may need more work. Also by doing this, I think it helps to get things started on a positive note so students know they can achieve their learning goals. I am experienced with teaching from elementary to high school levels, and I can also aid in GED prep.
