About Coppen
Throughout my life, I have acted as a bridge between English and French speakers, regularly translating and interpreting in both formal and informal settings. Extensive travel and exposure to people from many different cultures and backgrounds have helped me develop a strong sensitivity to communication.
This experience allows me to quickly identify a student's current level, understand where communication difficulties arise, and adapt my language accordingly. I believe effective teaching requires empathy as much as expertise, and I strive to create lessons that are both challenging and encouraging.
My goal is not simply to teach grammar and vocabulary, but to help students feel comfortable, confident, and capable when using English in real-life situations.
I have worked as a camp counsellor for YMCA Canada on a bilingual camp, where I frequently helped francophone and anglophone children communicate and build confidence interacting in their second language. I have also taught students at both secondary school and high school level, as well as adult learners.
Alongside language learning, I can help students express more complex ideas in spoken and written English. As an MA Philosophy graduate from the University of Edinburgh, I have spent years writing essays, dissertations, and academic arguments. This background allows me to support students who want to improve their essay writing, critical thinking, academic English, and ability to communicate sophisticated ideas clearly and effectively.
My goal is not simply to teach grammar and vocabulary, but to help students become confident communicators who can use English naturally in real-world situations, whether for travel, work, study, or everyday life.

Teaching Methodology
I believe language is best learnt through meaningful communication rather than rigid memorisation. My lessons focus on developing confidence and practical speaking ability through natural conversation, real-world examples, targeted corrections, and personalised exercises.
Having learnt and lived in both French and English-speaking environments, I understand that every student learns differently. I adapt my teaching style to each individual's level, interests, and goals, creating an engaging and supportive environment where students can progress at their own pace.
Rather than relying solely on traditional academic methods, I aim to make lessons dynamic, enjoyable, and relevant to everyday life. Whether you're learning English for travel, work, studies, or personal development, lessons are tailored to your needs.
