I used to teach both English and Chinese to a Japanese sophomore who was an exchange student in China. I customized the Japanese student’s study plan with appropriate materials and
clear learning objectives by using Japanese culture and international students’ life as a trigger to teach her vocabulary. In result of this, my Japanese student received dual stimulation in language acquisition represented by socio-cultural and linguistic aspects which reinforced her response and facilitated her learning. Language acquisition also helped me understand the performance of learners with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, for instance, positive transfer happened when the Chinese junior students were learning English word order while negative transfer occurred when the Japanese were studying English pronunciation. After studying in the MA TESOL program at Pepperdine University for a year, I can more easily figure out how cultural and linguistic diversity interact within learning or influence learning, which help me optimize my teaching methods.
