About Madison

As a UC Berkeley graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular and Cell Biology and a minor in Nutritional Sciences, I bring both academic excellence and real-world laboratory experience to my tutoring approach. I graduated from UC Berkeley, where I graduated, giving me firsthand understanding of the challenges students face at different academic levels. My professional experience as a Research Analyst at Charles River Laboratories provided me with extensive hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and cell culture work under strict GLP and GCP regulatory standards. This laboratory background allows me to bridge the gap between theoretical coursework and practical applications, helping students understand not just what they're learning, but why it matters in real-world scientific contexts. Currently, I'm gaining valuable clinical experience through physician shadowing and as a clinical research coordinator, which gives me unique insight into how foundational science concepts translate directly to patient care. This perspective is particularly valuable for pre-medical students who want to understand the clinical relevance of their coursework. My teaching philosophy centers on building conceptual understanding rather than memorization. I believe every student can excel in the sciences with the right guidance and personalized approach. Having successfully navigated the challenging path from university and into clinical research, I'm passionate about helping other students achieve their academic and career goals in the life sciences. I specialize in making complex biological concepts accessible through visual learning tools, real-world applications, and interactive problem-solving sessions. My goal is not just to help students pass their courses, but to develop the critical thinking skills and scientific literacy that will serve them throughout their academic and professional careers.

As a UC Berkeley graduate with a strong foundation in molecular and cell biology, neurobiology, and nutritional sciences, I believe in making complex scientific concepts accessible through personalized, evidence-based instruction. My approach centers on building conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization, helping students develop critical thinking skills that extend beyond individual courses.

Having maintained high academic performance across multiple institutions, I understand the challenges students face at different academic levels and can adapt my teaching methods accordingly.

I utilize I utilize diagrams, models, and pathway illustrations to help students visualize complex biological processes, from cellular mechanisms to neural circuits.
- Real-World Applications: Drawing from my research experience at Charles River Laboratories, I connect textbook concepts to current research and clinical applications, making abstract topics tangible and relevant.
- Active Learning Strategies: I employ interactive problem-solving sessions, guided questioning techniques, and concept mapping to ensure students actively engage with the material rather than passively receiving information.
- Personalized Pacing: Recognizing that each student learns differently, I adjust my teaching speed and methodology based on individual learning styles and comprehension levels.

Each lesson follows a structured yet flexible format:
- Review of previous concepts and connection to new material
- Core Instruction: Introduction of new concepts through multiple modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)
- Application Practice: Guided problem-solving and real-world examples
- Assessment & Reinforcement: Quick comprehension check and preview of next session
- Assignments (Optional): Targeted practice problems with clear learning objectives

What distinguishes my tutoring is my hands-on laboratory experience with molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, quantification, and PCR) that provides practical insights into the applications of theoretical concepts. My current shadowing and clinical research experience gives me unique insight into how basic science concepts translate to patient care, which is particularly valuable for pre-med students. Having excelled and graduated from a top-tier university, I understand the academic transitions students face.

I specialize in working with undergraduate biology majors, pre-health students preparing for the MCAT, community college students planning to transfer to four-year universities, and high school students in Advanced Placement Biology and Chemistry. My expertise spans general biology and advanced biology, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and metabolism, neurobiology and behavioral sciences, organic chemistry, nutritional sciences, and research methods and laboratory techniques. I work with students from high school through undergraduate level, with particular expertise in supporting students through challenging pre-medical coursework and research experiences.

My goal is not just to help students pass their courses, but to develop the analytical thinking and scientific literacy that will serve them throughout their academic and professional careers in the life sciences.
