Being in the Family and Child Studies Program at the University of Guelph has encouraged my philosophy as an educator to develop around a play-based and inquiry-based approach. I believe play can be used in a variety of methods to teach children various skills in the domains of learning. As a future educator, my focus is to make learning fun for the children I work with and I want to do this by basing my activities on the children's interests. Another factor I greatly value as a future educator is family involvement. Having families involved in a child's development is very important to myself as an educator. Using new and innovative ideas, I want to involve families into the child's learning and development. I value the diversity and knowledge that comes from each family. From the various experiences I have had of working with numerous children, I have learned that children learn best and are most engaged when they are learning about something of their interest or when their interests are incorporated into the teaching and learning methods. When children are engaged in learning is when they retain the most information. Thus, I very strongly believe in using an interest-based approach in which the educator adapts teaching and learning around a child’s interests.
A significant teaching-related experience that I had was during camp when I was struggling immensely with a group of kids. By connecting with them and breaking the barrier they create, you can build an understanding. I believe that emotions are key to learning as we are not only thinking machines but machines who feel. By making this a staple in the education of students in today's school, we can teach kids how to connect with their emotions and reflect upon not only themselves but their surroundings.
