About Kyle

My name is Kyle, and I am an award-winning playwright from Tennessee. My passion for theater began at a young age when I first discovered my father’s cast album of "The Phantom of the Opera." I fed that passion as a performer in high school and community theater productions. I am a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, where I majored in Communications and minored in Theater. My love of history inspired my first screenplay, "The First Debate," about the first televised presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. I wrote several more screenplays – being dubbed a “writer to watch” by The Black List – before returning my writing energy to my first love: the stage. I adapted my screenplay "Portrait of a Young Man" into a monologue, which was selected for the 2022 Rogue Theatre Festival in New York City. After performing the monologue myself at The Players Theatre, it was also produced at The Walnut House in Murfreesboro, TN. My play, "This House Is Not a Home," received its premiere in 2023, and was nominated for Best New Play by Broadway World Nashville. My next play, "Clocks Are Like Angels," was a featured finalist in the 2023 Appalachian Playwriting Festival, selected for the 2024 Rogue Theatre Festival, and won the 2024 Best New Play Award presented by Playwrights First in New York City. My latest play, "There Inherent," received its world premiere in January at Gallery Players Theatre in Brooklyn, NY, and was a finalist in the 2025 Broadway Bound Theatre Festival. I have a passion for teaching and helping others both chase and achieve their goals. I look forward to meeting you!

About the lesson

I believe in a conversational style of teaching. I want learning to be a dialogue between tutor and student, so I encourage participation and questions. First things first, I would want to go over the rules of drama, up to and including those laid out by Aristotle in "Poetics." From there, we would go over basic story structure: what separates story from plot, and why every desire is the engine of behavior, and why any drama is only as good as its conflict. I have 10 years of practical experience, writing plays for many different stages. I have had four plays staged in New York City, one of which won a Best New Play Award in 2024. My lessons are for playwrights of all stripes: those who are seeking to write their very first play, and those who are looking to take their writing to the next level
