About Catherine

I’m a qualified secondary English teacher with more than 30 years’ experience teaching in Australia and internationally. English is my main teaching background, and I have taught students across a wide range of ages, abilities and confidence levels.
I particularly enjoy helping students who find English vague or frustrating. I break tasks down, explain what teachers are actually looking for, and teach students how to organise their ideas clearly rather than simply telling them to “write more.”
My tutoring can support both mainstream school English and broader language development, including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and academic communication. My aim is to help students become more confident, accurate and independent users of English.

About the lesson

I offer English tutoring for secondary students who need support with both the school curriculum and the underlying language skills that make English easier.
Lessons can focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, paragraphing, essay writing, text analysis, creative writing, persuasive writing and preparation for assessments.
My approach is structured and practical. I identify the specific skills a student needs to improve, teach those skills explicitly, then help the student apply them to their own schoolwork. I also work with students who speak English as an additional language and need stronger academic English.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes and are tailored to the student’s year level, current schoolwork and areas of difficulty.
