About Jesse
I love teaching physics!
I received a bachelor's degree in physics from Indiana University and continued to Yale University for my PhD in astronomy. At Yale, I studied the tumultuous environments around the youngest stars in the galaxy, using giant radio telescopes.
I first discovered my passion for teaching while leading computing tutorials at the Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics, a research program for high school students from around the world. After Yale, I traveled the world for several months before beginning my teaching career as a lecturer at the University of Wyoming.
At Wyoming, I taught courses in introductory physics, astronomy, advanced electricity and magnetism, and computational methods. In all my classes, I focused on showing students the relevancy of physics in their everyday lives and incorporating authentic physics experiments inside lecture. After three years at Wyoming, I moved to the University of Oregon as an instructor of natural science in the Clark Honors College.
At Oregon, I designed several interdisciplinary courses from scratch, incorporating creative writing, robotic telescopes, and community outreach into my curriculum.
Maybe you need to pass that final pre-med requirement or you are exploring a career change. Whatever the case, I am excited to help you master physics!

I have taught university physics full-time for several years, so I am familiar with many of the common conceptual mistakes and successful problem solving strategies employed by students.
The best way to master physics (and mathematics for that matter) is by solving lots of example problems and to connect it to your own interests. We will go beyond your homework to work through interesting problems that draw on real-world examples and help you practice your conceptual struggles.
Who do I teach?
Students at any level of physics or math, from school age through to graduate school. I have experience with formal instruction at the high school and university level.
A typical 1-hr lesson plan:
10-15 minutes: Review action items from last week's study plan.
30 minutes: Review problems from homework, practice exams, or example problems I assigned to you. Drill concept questions and practice problem-solving strategies. Uncover misconceptions that are clouding the way you think about physics.
10-15 minutes: Make a detailed study plan for the next week, with action items.
