About Tom

I am a Historian, specialising in the history of the twentieth century, mathematics, science, and engineering. I completed my PhD with the Science Museum and have taught at universities and primary and secondary schools in the UK and USA, including the University of Oxford and University of Kent since 2015. I have taught a variety of twentieth century British history modules and topics, and can teach you to use a range of history methodologies, including cultural, social, economic, and oral history. My inclusive approach has helped over 1000 students raise their GCSE grades in history by two to three points, A-Level grades by a full letter grade, and degree-level students from 2:2 to 2:1 and 2:1 to a 1st. On a practical basis, I have taken my own research around the world, to the British Science Festival, and the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, and Berkeley University, California. On a personal note, I struggled to study well at school, going through clearing to go to university. Since then, I have developed excellent approaches that have allowed me to achieve 1st Class Honours in my degree, a distinction in my Masters, and use my thesis in a number of international publications and journal articles.

About the lesson

My teaching method is tailored to the strengths and areas for development of each student I have taught, based on their specific needs. I use real-world examples and primary sources to explain concepts, and help students apply lessons from the past, which helps them remember and apply them more easily. I also use extensive primary sources, including building computers and historical artefacts with students to help them explore their meaning. In terms of lesson structure, I start with a recap of readings and homework to check you have understood and can apply what we have previously learnt. I then move onto the main theme of that week, discussing context and stories to help you understand learning outcomes. Finally, we recap the discussion, chat about upcoming homework and readings, and then apply the lesson content to exams, coursework, and essays. As a tutor, I am calm, kind, and easy to talk with both inside and outside of lessons. While I expect you to work hard, do the preparation, and contribute, I am not going to tell you off if you haven't. Instead, I would work to understand why you couldn't, and remove that block. To support this, I work hard to create an environment where there are no silly questions, and where hard work leads to great rewards and outcomes.
