About Ian
I believe that to teach any subject is to teach someone to believe that they are capable of more than they thought before, and I believe that can only be achieved by educators who are as professional as they are passionate about their work. Throughout my education at West Point, experiences leading soldiers in the Army, and career as a teacher, I have made sure that professionalism and authenticity never clash with each other or come at the expense of the other. Just as I am able to assure a hundred students each year, you can expect me to closely read your work, learn who you are as a person, and give you feedback that is grounded in how you can harness the skills and insights you possess to reach even greater heights of understanding and proficiency in reading, writing, and making yourself understood.

My guiding philosophy is that people don't care what you know until they know that you care. Even when I'm at the front of a room of 25 students, I start every class by asking each one of them, "How are you doing today?" Little things go a long way, and treating students with dignity and respect is what creates the opportunities for me to identify connections between their interests and the real-life skills we are practicing. My philosophy also manifests itself in how I ask questions that lead students to recognize they understand the material and can do even more with it than they believed they could at first.
Whether you need help proofreading an essay, assistance with brainstorming ideas and a thesis statement for an essay, guidance on analyzing a specific work of literature, or some pointers on how to craft a resume, I offer one-on-one help for students in high school and beyond.
