About Ella

Born and raised in Panama, I grew up learning English and Spanish. My experience with tutoring Spanish started in high school, teaching elementary level Spanish to kids in private schools. At UVA, I interned as an assistant teacher at the 2nd grade level and helped carry out Spanish lessons when needed. Most recently, I was an assistant art teacher at Spanish speaking public school in Panama during my university hiatus. Fun fact: I am also fluent in Italian!

About the lesson

I believe that teaching is more than just a one-way transmission of knowledge. Learning should be a holistic, personalized experience, in which the student feels comfortable expressing to their tutor exactly what they need! My typical lesson plan will vary from person to person, as each may come with their own set of goals. If you are a professional trying to learn some basic conversational skills in Spanish, either to connect better with a client or just to improve your resume, I usually use a standard beginner's book as an outline for the lessons (this includes grammar, vocabulary, common phrases). If you are coming into tutoring for help in another class, we can base lessons off of the content that is being taught there. I am flexible with the structure, as everyone's needs are a little different! If you want to truly learn the language, memorization will rarely suffice. My teaching philosophy with language is to incorporate a bit of culture and history into each lesson plan, if that is desired. For example, you may be a college student heading off to Spain for a semester and may want a bit more context! This way, students feel more of a connection to the language they are trying to learn. Countless research studies in linguistics have proved this to be true. I am passionate about teaching my native language to anyone who wants to learn it! It is a wonderful way to open the mind. I am able to provide a unique experience to the student, as I was born and raised in Panama and understand that culture and context is an invaluable component in learning language. My studies in anthropology have also aided in my philosophy as well. Let's have fun!
