About Bukola

Hey! Future mathematician! Let's change your perspective about math. Let's go back to the sharpen your foundational skills - place values, multiplication facts, long division, order of operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages - so it can be like second nature when you advance to dividing polynomials by binomials, finding equivalent fractions, ratios and proportions, linear and nonlinear functions, piecewise functions, statistics... Math is fun! Let's create innovative ways to make learning and recalling essential concepts fun and relatable. Let's make mistakes together, and learn from our misconceptions to enable us to become even stronger mathematicians. The only thing that limits you is your mind, so make up your mind that you have got the potential to succeed in math.

"Why I am learning this... How will learning math help me in the future... Why is this important?" These are some of the questions posed by most of my students. Aside my lame math jokes as "Math is the only subject that counts", math is a universal language that builds in rigor on concepts already explored. We use math every day in some form. When making an apple pie on Thanksgiving, I had to use my knowledge of equivalent fractions for the quantities required for my recipe. This prevented me from re-washing the only 1/2 cup I had. Anyone can memorize the steps (procedural fluency) in solving a problem, but you need the necessary tools in your toolbox to effectively transfer prior knowledge and skills to tackle more challenging problems. I tell my kids that math doesn't change, it just gets rigorous. We will use what you know to tackle what you don't know. I'll make you love word problems because if you can't visualize the problem and use different strategies to solve the same problem, you don't quite understand the problem. Math is fun once you are willing to have an open mind, believe in yourself, take academic risks, normalize mistakes as a learning process, and regard each challenge as an opportunity to grow your dendrites. It is also important to remain organized with your note-taking skills, creating anchor charts as a quick reference to better advance your study skills, and continue exploring the graphing calculator - as working smart is more effective than working hard.
